Dry skin is common in the winter months, and even as things start to heat up, it’s something that many people experience every day. But combating dry skin may be easier than you think, and following these tried and tested methods could help you make it a thing of the past.

  • Since dry skin is caused by a decrease in the skin’s natural exfoliation, antioxidants and essential fatty acids are two of your most valuable allies. Antioxidants such as spinach and broccoli will stimulate oil production, while EFAs in salmon, olive oil and almonds will soften the skin.
  • If you haven’t made it to the gym yet, now’s a great time to start. Exercise enhances circulation and blood flow, resulting in rejuvenated skin. Plus, perspiration initiates the production of sebum, a natural moisturizer.
  • Water. Lots of it. Hydration is essential and you should be drinking at least 6 glasses of water per day. And if you find that your home heating system is drying you out, invest in a humidifier to pick up the slack.

While there are many things you can do to beat dry skin, there are also some things that you’ll want to avoid. Cut down the amount of time you spend in the shower, as long showers will wash away the skin’s natural moisturizers. And now might also be a good time to cut down on cigarettes and alcohol, as both of these deplete your nutrient stores.
